Jewellery
is not just a piece of accessory used to look good. It has and still enjoys great
cultural significance in various parts of the world!
Like
ancient Egyptian believed in placing several pieces of jewellery on the
deceased’s body. Pieces of jewellery such as wreaths, crowns, head bands, and
various belts embedded with several beads were found by historians during
excavation. Earrings, anklets, bracelets, rings, and necklaces were some of the
other types of jewellery found on the tomb.
Other
interesting jewellery from Egypt that has no traces in other cultures is a vest
worn around chest. This chest was either made of gold or painted yellow to
appear as gold. Even today, there exist tribes in Egypt, where girls long to
own a golden vest.
In
many Asian countries from ages, pearls are swallowed whole or in a powder form
as a medicine to cure illnesses. In some Asian countries like India, jewellery is
gifted to women at the time of their marriage and it is regarded as the symbol
of wealth, power and femininity.
In
the western culture, ring, a beautiful piece of jewellery has been used since
ages a symbol to mark special occasions like engagement and marriage.
The
importance of jewellery in several cultures around the world proves that it
means much more than just a piece of ornament!
